In the Eastern region, when thinking about a delicious fruit like durian, Chanthaburi comes to the top of people’s mind. But for salak or zallacca, especially, the Sumali breed, Trat is on the top of the list. For Rayong, mangosteen, the queen of Thai fruits, seems to be suitable for representing the province. In particular, fresh mangosteen from Suan Nong Taphan in Amphoe Ban Khai, which always wins the first prize from every contest at the provincial competition level every year. The fruit orchards here in Nong Taphan offer from pricey mangosteens for export to organic mangosteens that draw attention from the crowd to taste them in the orchard and generate a lot of
money. Interestingly, most of the mangosteen orchards in this district will also grow betel palm trees. It is not surprising to learn the fact that Ban Khai is the first place in the country that has produced betel palm leaf plates, which have been developed into commercial products as they are today. Ban Khai has yet more to offer that includes the world-class tropical pitcher plant or monkey cups gardens, national standard level paddy fields, as well as Khao Mai Kaew Prison, a prison that is open as an attraction. However, all of these cannot be compared with Rayong’s accent of the people of Ban Khai that is considered to be the district’s highlight.
