Goldstein Redux
This time there was no APB from Peter; I was alone in the house with Gus, my TV, and my computer when the call came. Ed Abramson, with whom I hadn’t spoken since 1986, called to tell me that his friend Charles Goldstein might know of a job opportunity for me. You will recall from way back in Chapter Twenty-Five that I had met Charles (never call him “Charlie”) Goldstein in connection with the Portman hotel trans- action. You might also recall that I referred to him in that chapter as “the extremely imperious Charles Goldstein, one of the most egotistical, powerful, difficult, and detested attorneys in the City.” The evidence was that that remained an accurate description, but my standards after fifteen months of wearing a red sweatshirt and conversing with Gus had affected my principles a tad. I placed the call.
It was typical Goldstein. His secretary had me on hold for about five minutes before he picked up and greeted me in a fashion from which I
