In which our author abandons his airplane and cycles home, sort of.
Going South
Moving right along: You’ll recall that I came to believe that one of Charles Goldstein’s motives for connecting me with Jerry Jacobs was to have me retain his firm, Shea & Gould, if I were fortunate enough to get the job at the RTC. Lest there be any doubt in my mind, he called me within two weeks of my arrival in D.C. and asked for work. As it hap- pens, his firm, one of the few then on the RTC list, was next in line for an assignment, so no problem. My creation of a national search in order to formulate a much larger list than was then in place did not push Shea & Gould out into the cold, although it did reduce Goldstein’s business with us. But it kept him in touch with me, which did not turn out to be a bad thing.
You’ll also recall that my intended tour of duty in Washington was two years, which I adjudged to be fair to them and as much as I could tolerate being a long-distance commuter. With the end of my commit- ment in view, I started my job search, but, with the economy still somewhat in the doldrums, the opportunities were, to say the least, not
