  KNOWLEDGE CENTER ARTIFACT DISPLAYS
The iron lung was first used at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in 1929, and became an important tool for the care of sufferers of paralytic polio. The Brigham Edu- cation Institute showcased the original Iron Lung and Pulmonary Archive Display in the BEI Knowledge Center from January 2018 to September 2018.
A BWH Archives exhibit about anesthesia titled “Painless”.
The artifacts on display range from the earliest days of ether
in the 1840s up through the present — including a 2018, state-of-the-art anesthesia workstation, courtesy of General Electric Healthcare (see photo). This exhibit began in the BEI Knowledge Center on October 25th, 2018 and will be on display for at least six months.
SERVICES OFFERED
  PRESERVING OUR HISTORY,
LINKING IT TO OUR FUTURE
The BEI oversees our Brigham archives services. We integrate with an archivist from The Center for the History of Medicine in the Countway Library of Medicine, who is the custodian for the historical archives belonging to the Brigham & Women’s Hospital. The BWH Archives collects and preserves historically noteworthy records of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital from 1980 to the present.
The material in this collection spans more than 180 years of BWH hospital history, and includes historic photographs, annual reports, administrative correspondence, building specifications, artifacts and memorabilia, training program and fund raising records, and serial and stand-alone publications.
