P. 3
Dear Friends and Supporters of ARCS Oregon,
Welcome to the 14th annual Scholar Awards Luncheon, where we celebrate 70 science scholars who are working on research that may well improve our lives and the lives of future generations. ARCS Oregon scholars, in nationally top-ranked doctoral programs at OHSU, OSU, and UO, explore ideas on a wide range of projects in science, engineering and medical research. Their work extends from the ocean floor to the atmosphere, from brain memory to neurodegeneration, from microbes to humankind, from forests to nuclear engineering.
Our mission is to advance science in America by providing financial awards to academically outstanding U.S. citizens studying to complete PhD degrees. Our university partners choose the recipients of these awards, using the awards to draw the most promising scholars to their programs here in Oregon. Just as highly regarded lead researchers are key to a scholar’s search for the right PhD program, the ARCS award is also a key incentive. This is a win-win situation, benefitting both the scholars and our sponsored university programs.
ARCS scholars receive awards of $18,000 over three years, and the awards are unrestricted so students can focus on academics and research, not on financial concerns. ARCS awards are not scholarships or loans that need to be repaid.
This year you will hear in- depth from three of our scholar alums, in a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Harriet Nembard of the College of Engineering at Oregon State University. You will hear insights into their areas of research, and their lives as researchers.
Thank you for being here today. Thank you for your financial support in advancing doctoral research and education here in Oregon that will benefit the world.
