“I am investigating cognitive decline in men receiving hormone deprivation therapy
for prostate cancer and its effect on their ability to return to work following cancer treatment. The number of prostate cancer survivors is projected to grow due to
earlier detection, prostate-specific antigen testing, and effective treatments. Despite these successes, survivors face adverse consequences from cancer treatments, including cognitive decline.
As a clinician of 18 years, I have seen many areas in healthcare that could be improved with further research. The ARCS award has allowed me to conduct translational research that will clarify how cognitive function in PC survivors receiving hormone therapy may impact their quality of life and ability to continue working. Results from my
study can tailor interventions to mitigate cognitive changes and lead to programs to help survivors.
I am grateful to ARCS Oregon and my donors for helping me make this dream a reality and for their encouragement along this journey. I plan to continue my research and update ARCS members along the way!”
