P. 3
Dear Friends and Supporters of ARCS,
To those of you who are new to this event, welcome. To those who have attended before, welcome back. To all, please enjoy learning not only what we do but, more importantly, what our scholars are doing and will do for our collective future benefit.
The members of ARCS Foundation Oregon are women who have joined together to support a single objective of great importance to our state, the nation, and the world: advancing American growth and leadership in STEM fields: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
We do this by providing three-year unrestricted scholar awards of $6,000
per year to deserving PhD candidates in nationally ranked STEM programs at Oregon Health & Science University, Oregon State University, and the University of Oregon. Our partner universities use these awards to attract the best and the brightest to study in the state. There are no restrictions on who can receive an award other than that the recipients must be full-time students who maintain a GPA of at least 3.5 and be U.S. citizens.
Scholars use the unrestricted awards to attend professional conferences, buy equipment, pay living expenses, or support their general well-being to focus on scholastic excellence. Many scholars tell us that they value the personal support we provide as much as the monetary awards.
In the current academic year, ARCS Oregon is supporting a record number of 80 scholars. Their areas of study represent a broad range of activities across STEM fields. This breadth and depth of work is a joy to behold, as you will read in this booklet.
This is our second year hosting our principal fundraising event virtually
and we again miss the opportunity to meet you in person. The continuing worldwide pandemic highlights that “Science is the Solution” to many pressing global problems. Support for scientists who will create new knowledge and innovations in STEM fields is more important today than ever.
Your support is essential to the continuation of our mission and the success of present and future PhD scholars. Your support can and does make a world of difference.
Thank you,
Anne Jarvis
President, ARCS Foundation Oregon
