Anna studies how tides and currents interact with steep topography in in in in in the ocean including tidewater glacial fjords in in in in Alaska Her research goal is to to understand how tidal currents across shallow sills in in these systems dissipate energy and and and transfer heat from the the the large ocean system system into the the the fjords Understanding this transfer of heat is is important because warmer fjord fjord water temperatures enhance glacier melting and can impact the ecosystem Advisor:

by disturbances Specifically Marie is is is examining how the the the diversity of of these groups is is is different in in in in old-growth forests forests compared to recently thinned forests forests and plantations of of of Douglas fir In addition Marie studies the the ecology of of the the western spotted skunk an an an understudied but important carnivore species and and how they use the the heterogeneous landscape Through her research she hopes to inform forest management and and and improve ways in in which humans coexist and and protect natural areas 13
