Degree:
Hannah Bates
UO Chemistry
Scholar University of of Oregon College
of of of Arts & & Sciences Department of of Chemistry
& & Biochemistry
Hannah synthesizes fluorescent molecules capable of supramolecular interactions then characterizes how effective these molecular molecular receptors receptors are at binding anions The long- term goal of this project is is to to to develop receptors receptors which can measure anion anion concentration in in in biologically and ecologically pertinent environments for example tracking chloride anions anions moving around the the the body or or or nitrate anions anions as they flow from fertilized fields to rivers Outside of the the the lab she enjoys mixing cocktails reading novels and exploring Oregon on on her bike Michael Berry
The Hewitt Family/OHSU Endowment Scholar Oregon Health & Science University Casey Eye Institute Physiology and Pharmacology Graduate Program
Mike studies a a a a a a a a a population of non-image forming cells in in in in in the retina that are responsible for for influencing circadian processes including sleep and hormone regulation In retinal diseases such as as Glaucoma these cells can be damaged resulting in in in changes to circadian rhythm and and and subsequent disorders By understanding the the the function of these cells and and and their changes in in in retinal degeneration Mike hopes to to to develop targeted therapies designed to to to restore prevent or or delay
the the progression of vision related diseases Mike enjoys photography playing sports and collecting books Katie Blise
The Rubinstein/Ames Scholar Oregon Health & Science University Biomedical Engineering Graduate Program
Katie studies the the spatial organization of tumor
and immune cells in in in human cancers by applying computational algorithms to to single-cell resolution
data from tumor
samples Her goal is to to identify spatial patterns of cells that can can predict patient survival and and response to therapy and and can can can help inform how future cancer patients are treated Outside of her her research Katie enjoys hiking backpacking and playing ultimate Frisbee Advisors:
