1. Angelique Albert
Bobby reported that he and Sherry Salway Black had a breakfast meeting with Angelique in Scottsdale, Arizona prior to the Entrepreneurship Scholarship representatives’ meeting. She was surprised but very enthusiastic at the suggestion that she is being considered to be invited to join the Foundation Board of Directors. Bobby gave her a broad overview of what the Foundation does, although she knows the Foundation well from her long history of relationships with JSF from her work at Salish Kootenai College, the American Indigenous Business Leaders, as a Gonzaga MBA- AIE graduate and now as the CEO of Native Forward Scholars Fund. Bobby explained some of the specifics regarding JSF Board service, including the expectation of approximately 100 hours/year and a high standard for physical attendance at meetings. He advised that there is compensation for the position.
Angelique expressed that she is very enthusiastic and interested in this possibility. In addition to being the CEO of Native Forward Scholarship Fund, she is currently on several boards in Indian Country. She was already contemplating resigning from one of them and intends to do so in the near future. If service with JSF would necessitate her clearing other things on her table, she would be willing to consider that.
Bobby offered to be available to answer any questions she may have later. He explained that he will now pass on a report of their meeting to the Board Chair and the Chair of the Governance and Nominating Committee and that JSF would be in touch.
Malcolm said that he has known of Angelique for many years and had interviewed her twice for the impact section of his book. He is very favorably impressed with her.
Bobby described her as a “bright lady”. He noted that he had a confidential conversation with Rick Williams who said that he is a very big fan of Angelique. In fact, he had provided a recommendation for her for the job at Native Forward Scholars Fund (which was the American Indian Graduate Center at the time). He thinks she is articulate, humble, and a team player. Bobby also forwarded Sherry’s support of Angelique’s candidacy.
The question of whether or not her only interest would be in Indigenous Peoples programing was addressed. It was agreed that there is also considerable overlap in Indigenous Peoples’ issues with disadvantaged programing.
Noting that there is a specific plan in place for recruiting new Board members, it was agreed to stick with that plan. Once she responds positively to Bobby, he will ask for a resume and advise that she will hear from Bill. He can then invite her to attend the December meetings. It might be possible for Bill, Malcolm and Bobby to meet with her that Friday afternoon before the reception and dinner. She would, of course, be invited to come to Friday’s dinner where she could be seated with Mike and David to give them a chance to get to know her a little better.
There was discussion about how much meeting material to provide if she is going to come to the December meeting. It was agreed that she would really need to have all of the material in order to fully understand what is going on in the meeting and how much material there typically is prior to a Grant Program Committee meeting. She would need to be advised that the material is confidential.
