1. March 2023 meeting minutes
The minutes of the Committee’s March 2023 meeting had been circulated and were approved with one correction. On page 7, the word “according” was misspelled in the first sentence of the third paragraph under the heading of Native Forward Scholars Fund.
2. Business arising from the minutes
There was no business arising that was not either on the Agenda or in the Program Notes.
3. Update on programs
Reports from the following organizations had been circulated: Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind, Scholarship America and Weingarten Children’s Center. Also included was a letter from JSF to the School District of Palm Beach County granting permission for Take Stock/Johnson Scholars funds being held by the District to be used for $2,000 annual stipends to the on-site school coordinators. There also were reports from recent JSF site visits to Mount Allison University and the University of New Brunswick.
4. Board Retreat Update
Lowell expressed his appreciation for being able to attend the meeting in advance of the Board Retreat scheduled for December 3rd. JSF learned about him through the Center for Effective Philanthropy, and Phil Buchanan, President of CEP, highly recommended JSF to him. Lowell previously served at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and over the past 15 years he has worked with a variety of organizations through his consulting firm, Cascade Philanthropy Advisors. He plans to interview the Board and Consultants prior to the retreat, and the agenda will be set after the interviews are conducted. The goal will be to achieve greater clarity on strategy and mission, and reading materials will include a chapter from Malcolm’s forthcoming book and one from Phil Buchanan’s book.
5. Discretionary and Matching grants
a. The following Director Discretionary Grant was unanimously approved:
• Florida Baptist Children’s Home $25,000
b. No Matching Grants were submitted for approval.
