T he agendas for JSF Grant Program Committee meetings can be quite full. Much of our time is spent in consideration of potential grant opportunities, their
alignment to our mission, and the effectiveness, efficiency, and potential of their applications. These discussions can raise philosophical concepts related to grant making.
This summer, there will be an opportunity for Grant Program Committee Members to engage in these discussions at greater length through JSF Round Table events. They’ll replace our typical Continuing Education events during that time. We will cover twotopicsthissummer: OnJuly5thwewilldiscuss “Matching as an element of our grant agreements.” On August 10th we will discuss “Sustainability as a consideration for grants.”
Unlike previous Continuing Education events, the Round Table events will have a slightly different format. There will not be a single presenter. The Round Table event is designed to offer a platform for all attendees to share perspectives and raise questions for discussion.
JSF Grantee partners cover a wide spectrum of size, circumstances and organizational sophistication. Consequently, the use of matching varies in our partnerships. We thought it would be helpful to hear from partners firsthand and sought to share alternative perspectives. On July 5th, we’ve invited Craig Montford from Pathways, Canada and Prairie Bighorn-Blount from AIBL to join us. They will share some broad perspectives related to matching from the lens of their nonprofits. We do not intend to discuss their specific grant agreements with JSF. Following their comments, we will open the floor for input and discussion. To facilitate discussion, we are compiling an outline to productively navigate topics related to matching. Here are a few that we’ve considered:
Robert A. Krause
• The value and risks of matching to Grantees/ JSF
• Institutional guarantees
• Matching- All or nothing vs Up to...
• The matching ratio
• The creative use of matching
• Matching as a component of Endowments
vs Programs vs Scholarships
We will post the Round Table agenda to include target topics in the Continuing Education section of Diligent Boards prior to the meeting. If there is a matching-related topic you’d like to discuss, please forward to staff. We plan to record the discussion for internal use only. So if you are unable join us, you will have access to the discussion on Diligent Boards, in the Continuing Education section.
As an added bonus, for those who are interested, Lady will open the Zoom call at 10:45 and offer a quick tutorial on Zoom skills. She will share how to use the Zoom program options to better communicate in a discussion format.
See you on July 5th.
