BENDER LEADERSHIP ACADEMY SITE VISIT REPORT (2)
Not surprisingly, the Academy’s programs transitioned to a virtual format during the pandemic. They have been slow to resume in-person programing, and Scott expects there will always be a virtual component going forward. While most of the Academy’s offerings operate during the school year, there is a summer program for student leaders. That program teaches them about skills like community engagement, mental
health, financial literacy and public speaking. The Academy recently started a scholarship program that will award $1,000 scholarships to help prepare youth for the world of work. In addition to educational expenses, recipients can use the
funds for clothes, laptops and other necessities.
Scott was asked about the number of students involved in Bender Leadership Academy. The largest number of them are involved with Disability Mentoring Day, with smaller numbers participating in the Academy’s other programs. The Academy’s programs are offered for free to students.
Asked whether the intent of the LOI is to expand the programs currently being offered, Scott and Joyce said that is correct. Joyce said that the stigma surrounding employment of people with disabilities is something she constantly fights. Sometimes job shadowing is a way to get employers comfortable before they hire students for internships.
According to the LOI, Bender Leadership Academy proposes to raise matching funds at a
rate of 1:1. As the conversation concluded, Bobby explained JSF’s grant application and evaluation process, and he said that staff would be in touch soon.
