SUSF ANNUAL MEETING REPORT (8)
There was a discussion about how the schools could collect the students’ permanent email addresses before they leave campus. Perhaps on the application or renewal forms? There are some complicating factors, however. For instance, some schools try to train students to use their university email addresses for all campus correspondence and don’t want them using two addresses. Also, some students might be uncomfortable sharing their personal email addresses. Ultimately, it was agreed that it would be better to collect the information on the front end rather than chasing it down later if needed.
JSF PROGRAM ISSUES
There was considerable discussion about the timing of the application deadline. The application is for all 12 universities and is published on their websites as well as the Foundation’s website. Sharon reminded the group that they had chosen May 1st because it allows time for the Financial Aid Department to do its work and then time for the DRCs to make decisions. A request for the amount of scholarship money has to go to the Board of Governors in mid-June. It was clear that many of the schools are very lenient regarding the time they will accept an application. Ultimately, it was agreed that the published deadline will remain May 1st. Exactly how each school administers the acceptance period is a school-by-school decision.
A discussion about exactly how the student scholars are selected revealed that at most of the schools, the process is pretty internal to the DRC. The size of the DRC team and the number of applicants have a big impact on who will be involved. Including professors and other school administrators can get complicated. It was also noted that not everyone understands the unique issues of some students with disabilities.
CeDAR at FAMU probably has the biggest awards event, with a dinner and individual awards presented in recognition of all of the Center’s scholars. Their scholarship acceptance form includes that they agree to attend this evening event.
FSU does a PowerPoint presentation recognizing scholars.
USF used to do a big luncheon that was always attended by the President of USF. However, in recent years it has become more difficult to coordinate students across all three campuses.
