Resilience
Grant Program Committee meeting minutes (9)
the organization’s College Access and Success program for high school students. The program helps first-generation students get into and through college by providing academic support, mentoring and exposure to a broader world. For the 2021-2022 academic year, there are 53 high school students and 130 college students in the program. OJS proposes to raise $15,000 in matching funds from individual donors through its annual Scholar’s Day campaign. Though the videoconference with Irene Quevedo, the organization’s Executive Director, was positive, a site visit there has not yet taken place. Although the request is relatively small, the organization appears promising. Conducting a site visit could also be beneficial.
The Committee approved an application from Operation Jump Start for $15,000 for one year with a 1:1 match to support its College Access and Success Program.
c. Linkage document
A linkage document from David on Nativity Preparatory School had been circulated. The report underscores the connection between poverty and academic achievement, and it discusses how Nativity works to break the cycle of poverty. David’s interviews with President Brian Maher, Director of Advancement Abbie Clavin and Director of Graduate Support Malik Richard revealed that the school has strong teachers and volunteers who work closely with the students and their families. JSF funding has supported programs at Nativity since 2017. The latest grant is a $400,000 commitment over 4 years with a 2:3 matching component to build an endowment for the Last Dollar Aid College Success Program. The report concludes that the school’s success embodies JSF’s Theory of Change in a meaningful way.
d. Existing and potential grantees
A list of Disadvantaged Programing Grantees and Potential Grantees had been circulated and was discussed. An initial discussion with Boys Hope Girls Hope went well. There appear to be several promising grantees on the horizon.
12. Communications and social media
A Social Media Report had been circulated. Lady noted that the Facebook numbers have increased, as have visits to the website. The higher website traffic was expected as a result of scholarship application season. Angie reported that boosting selected Facebook posts by geographic region seems to be having a positive effect.
13. Thank-you grant
After the meeting, a motion was made to offer a thank-you grant to Ryerson University, which hosted the Committee for a site visit. Members were polled.
The Committee approved a thank-you grant of $10,000 to Ryerson University. 14. Upcoming meetings
