1. March 2024 meeting minutes
The minutes of the Committee’s March 2024 meeting had been circulated and were approved with three corrections.
2. Business arising from the minutes
There was no business arising that was not either on the Agenda or in the Program Notes.
3. Update on programs
A year-end report from the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (FSDB) had been circulated. King was asked for his thoughts about FSDB. He commented favorably and noted that the school always provides good reports. A brief discussion took place about FSDB’s use of only $574,484.30 of its $730,000 JSF allocation for the 2023-2024 school year. The balance was transferred to a JSF Contingency Fund. It was mentioned FSDB often places some of its JSF funds in contingency. A question was asked about an LOI from the Centre d’amitié autochtone de Lanaudière in Joliette, Quebec, which focuses on culturally relevant education for Indigenous students. The LOI mentioned that this school learned of JSF through the Martin Family Initiative. The LOI had been declined because the program’s path to a college degree was unclear, but it was marked as a possibility for future investment.
Site visit reports from the College of Menominee Nation (CMN) and Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University (LCOOU) also had been circulated. A comment was made that it was good to see the investment CMN has made in its JSF endowment over the years. The LCOOU site visit revealed some areas of deficiency that will take some time to resolve.
