(CONT’D) where we pause for a moment. Dozens of disgusting bacteria now join the pollen spore. The disposal turns on and we spin back out of the sink into the air again.
We fall towards the floor and land on the family dog as he races through the house. He takes a sharp corner and we’re flung through a doorway, caught in the breeze of a fan and then heading straight towards a high chair where a baby opens up her mouth for a bite of food from her mother, and we (along with the pollen and swirl of bacteria) fly right in, up through the nasal passageway, and into the lungs.
We rest for a moment inside the reddish, sponge-like interior of the lungs. We see blurry shadows begin to emerge from outside the body as the soundscape changes.
The sounds of an EKG. The baby’s breathing becomes belabored. She whimpers. Wheezes. As she coughs the world shakes. We hear the muffled sounds of parents talking to a doctor.
MOTHER: I just don’t understand! These symptoms have come out of nowhere.
FATHER: We haven’t taken her anywhere! We haven’t even had guests...we’re being so careful.
DOCTOR: Of course, of course. But don’t worry, she’s going to be fine. The tests we ran show that her symptoms are a result of common home allergens.
