ABOVE LEFT: With Chrysler’s interference, the launch of the Diablo was delayed until 1990. Whilst the Diablo was going through all the design intrigue, approval for the baby Lamborghini project P140 was given by Lee Iacocca. (Gautam Sen)
ABOVE RIGHT: Alejandro de Tomaso asked Gandini to modernise the De Tomaso Pantera. The result was rather heavy and stolid. (Makarand Baokar)

ABOVE (LEFT & RIGHT):
Gandini’s design for the Maserati Shamal was totally different. No doubt it was dependent on the style of the donor vehicle, the Karif, yet it was dramatic. (Ben Erickson)
LEFT & BELOW: Lamborghini’s replacement for the Jalpa, the car codenamed P140, was an all-new design featuring a new V10. The styling, although distinctively different from the Diablo, was yet recognisable as a Lamborghini, and markedly different than Gandini’s proposal for Bugatti. (Private Source)
