The book was honored last week by the Motor Press Guild with its highest award, the Dean Batchelor Award for Excellence in Automotive Journalism.
This is the second time that Considine has been so honored by the national journalism organization, his “American Grand Prix Racing: A Century of Drivers & Cars” being similarly awarded a “Batchelor” in 1997. He joins Pete Lyons and John Lamm as two-time winners of the prestigious award.
“Yanks” is the first three volumes of a seven-volume set that will tell the stories of every American driver who has raced in the 24 Hours of Le Mans since the race began.
This just-released boxed set of three books covers the years 1923 to 1979 and features a wealth of detail that’s not only precise and complete but great reading.
Much of the content has been developed from Considine’s extensive direct interviews with the participants, many of those personal stories of the classic race untold (at least in public) until now.
There’s a true sense of the event flowing through every page and the gut feeling of what it means to every driver and team member in Considine’s telling of the adventure that’s the 24 Hours.
This book takes participating at Le Mans very personally.
And the photography and art direction of “Yanks” is as compelling as the text with hundreds of wonderful photos, many never before published, that perfectly match and amplify Considine’s expert reporting.
The hallmark of a work like this is in detail and referencing and Considine has given fans and scholars alike a detailed road map of where this book came from as well as acting as a repository of information should one want to know more about almost any aspect of the event. His extensive appendices and full index will serve interested fans and historians alike, fulfilling the promise of a true work of history.
