The Yanks at Le Mans E 1970
1969 Formula 5000 champion, 29-year old Tony Adamowicz was the only rookie.
“I had always wanted to go to Le Mans,” he remembered, “and when the opportunity came to go with Luigi Chinetti, I accepted immediately. When I got there, of course I was awe-struck by everything – the grandstands, the track itself, the ambiance and just being there. I walked the entire circuit. And at various points, they have plaques for various drivers who’ve bought the farm on that piece of real estate in France. “And the first thing I noticed was Hansgen’s plaque, and that was at the end of the pit straightaway, before you start going up to the Dunlop Bridge. It was hard for me to believe that someone like Walt Hansgen would die there, but I’d never experienced how dangerous that circuit was – until 1970.”
You talk about the GT40 being 40 inches off the ground, well, this (the NART Ferrari 312 P) was probably 30 inches off the ground. It was a low-slung, slinky Italian design.

Crowds gather as four NART Ferraris are unloaded. The No. 10 512 S for Germans Helmut Kelleners and Georg Loos is already on the ground and the Posey/Bucknum 512 S is being rolled off. On top, two 312 P coupes wait. The No. 39 will be withdrawn when sponsorship falls through, but Chuck Parsons and Le Mans rookie Tony Adamowicz will race the No. 57. MICHEL GUILLOUX
