forgot where my pit was. It is an unexpected incident like this that can lose a race for you.”
Warren Agor drove a fine race, and got his chance to finish in second spot when Warren Tope in a Mustang was forced back into the pack by spin-outs and tire trouble, but eventually forced his way back to finish in fifth place. Roy Woods drove the other factory entered AMC Javelin to a fourth place finish just behind DeLorenzo.
The introduction of stock car drivers in the Trans-Am race was another of Jim Haynes’ ideas, Carl Stevens and Tony DeLorenzo being the two drivers who took up the offer, neither of whom were normally
accustomed to the left and right turns of a road racing track. Stevens went out after seven laps when a rod in his Mustang went right through the block. “I loved it while I was running. It seems to be the story of this year. I’ve had the honor of blowing seven motors in the last six days. What I would really like to see are the modifieds race at Lime Rock. The big engines and Indy tires would put on a spectacular show,” he said.
It had now become the normal procedure to have a helicopter on stand-by at the track so that emergencies could be dealt with should the need arise. Unwittingly the presence of the helicopter gave further fuel to the fire for the LRPC when they learned that it had also been used to give pleasure rides to spectators.
