This position neatly encapsulates the ambivalence – and the pragmatism – of Nuffield’s approach to M.G. and racing: if the company were not risking its money and the chances of success were reasonable, then he would support a venture. Otherwise, leave it to those with deeper pockets. Cecil Kimber had played a shrewd game, even if the withdrawal of M.G. from racing had hurt. He had known when to draw his horns in, whilst still keeping the debate alive, and instead had persuaded Nuffield to back Goldie Gardner’s record-breaking, which brought in equal amounts of publicity with rather less expenditure or financial risk.
Kimber’s menu from the celebratory lunch at the Trocadero Restaurant in London’s Theatreland. Signatories include Oliver Lucas, John Cobb, Sir Malcolm Campbell and George Eyston.
