Lesser known amongst the Italian engineering and
prototyping firms, Stola, which had been founded

in 1919 by Alfredo Stola (Senior), had, by the turn
of the millennium, some half a dozen studios in places
as diverse as Brazil, France and Italy and two more
were added subsequently in Japan and the US. Led by
the uncle-nephew duo of Roberto and Alfredo Stola,
the founder’s grandson, the first contact between the
Stolas and Marcello Gandini was in connection with the
development of the Bugatti EB110, in 1989.
The work was commissioned by Bugatti, through a
meeting with engineer Paulo Stanzani and Romano
