Amongst the many odd projects that came Marcello
Gandini’s way, one was for the design of a pick-up

truck, this time from Alejandro de Tomaso. Exactly
what he had in mind is not known, but he summoned
Gandini one day, and, according to the designer, “If I
remember right, it was towards the end of summer 1998,
when de Tomaso asked me to conceptualize a pick-up
truck based on a few vague hardpoints.”
What was the base of the vehicle? “Well, that wasn’t told
to me…” But the chances that the base may have been
American, and perhaps a Ford, seems a strong possibility.
Or did he see a niche in the European market? Or was it a
design exercise for Kjell Qvale? It may have been an on-
paper exercise to attract or negotiate another project
with the American entrepreneur. But whatever the
reason, Gandini drew a pick-up for Alejandro de Tomaso
on October 30, 1998.
(THIS PAGE) On October 30, 1998, Marcello Gandini drew several design proposals for a pick-up on the behest of Alejandro de Tomaso.
Two of them are here on this page, with the one below an example of a wedge-style pick-up two decades before the Tesla Cybertruck.
Nothing seems to have happened with this project idea. MARCELLO GANDINI ARCHIVES
