➎ Marcello Gandini always had a major fan following in Japan, and
one of the many non-automotive product design commissions was
for a set of saké glasses for a Japanese manufacturer.

A few years before the 2006 Winter Olympics was to take
place in Turin, the idea of a meeting place, a showroom
of sorts was considered in the forests behind the studio,
and Marcello Gandini’s design for this convention center
was a wondrous spaceship, best described by Simone
Carena (see ‘UFO sightings and the MG Mothership’ on
the following pages).
Japan is probably the country where Marcello Gandini has
the most fans and the greatest appreciation of his work,
which is why he has been on the cover of magazines there,
and approached by several companies that wanted him
to design items such as sake glasses and tabletop clocks
as illustrated here.
