the 1986 model year. The ‘Cabrio’ carried on with the introduction of a new 911 engine in 1984 and convertible 911s have remained a staple of Porsche’s sports car lineup for the past 40 years.
For the 1984 model year, Porsche gave the standard 911 the vaunted Carrera nameplate. The engine was substantially revised and enlarged to 3.2 liters by lengthening the stroke with the use of the crankshaft from the 911 Turbo. The engine case itself was strengthened and fuel injection was upgraded from the CIS system to Bosch’s Motronic
Digital Motor Electronics system (computerized engine management was a relatively new concept at the time). Timing chain tensioners were improved (earlier 911s are often upgraded with these units), manifolds improved for better air flow and the alternator upgraded. Although the cars gained some weight, the new 911 was more powerful and more fuel efficient, thanks in part to the engine’s electronic control unit.
