It was the first of his six victories in the German Grand Prix. This 1926 race led Daimler-Benz employee, Alfred Neubauer, to begin developing a signal system to report information from the pits to the drivers. The pit signaling concept had been mentioned in the DMG report from the Indianapolis 500 race of 1923 noting the advantage it gave to the American teams.
Neubauer went on to personify the role of racing team manager from the 1930s to the 1950s.
Although Germany was prohibited by treaty from producing most types of military vehicles and arms, there was an allowance for defensive and policing vehicles that could be produced by
Ferdinand Porsche with Alfred Neubauer, at the wheel of the Mercedes, at the 1924 Targa Florio.
  PORSCHE POINTS
tIn 1926, Louise Porsche was entered in the Kartellfahrt Rally in a Mercedes and recorded a faster time in a hill climb section than the factory drivers Adolf Rosenberger and Rudolf Caracciola. Ferry Porsche wrote that this was due to Louise over-revving the engine while the hot shoes kept to the prescribed rev limit.
tAdolf Hitler first met Dr. Porsche on July 11, 1926 at the German Grand Prix at Avus. It was a brief congratulatory moment between the two Austrians after Caracciola had won the race for Mercedes in front of 200,000 spectators.
tIn the late 1920s, the Mercedes racing cars were known as ‘White Elephants’ due to their size and the German national racing color being white. In 1927, red bands on the hoods were used to make the works-entered cars easier for fans to spot. In the 1930s, silver famously became the color for German grand prix cars, hence the ‘Silver Arrows’.
