A series of outdated front engine Formula 1 Ferraris with
Formula 1 clearly shifted.

Federation was looking for a new star. Ferrari supported the
project and made one of its Formula 1 cars available. The young
1961
of the 1961 season, when the new regulations based
Giancarlo Baghetti used this “training car” to win his first two
on 1.5-liter engines came into force. While the British
teams struggled to win Grand Prix races, Ferrari worked hard
to finalize the 1961 model, named 156. The center of gravity in
Stirling Moss, generally recognized as the best driver, won the
first round of the championship in Monaco, but Ferrari then took
over for virtually the rest of the season. Richie Ginther, back with
the team, took a solid second place after Moss in Monaco. Wolfgang
von Trips achieved the first Ferrari victory with a mid-engine car in
the Netherlands and Phil Hill took first place in Belgium.
Outside of the championship, a Ferrari driver made headlines.
After the disappearance of an entire generation of leading Italian
drivers (Ascari, Castellotti, Musso), the Italian Automobile

Formula 1 titles in the spring of 1961. These races were not part
of the World Championship, and their line-ups were of a relatively
low standard, but when it became clear that Ferrari was short of a
driver for the French Grand Prix, Baghetti joined the team.

American Formula 1 champion.
