Merzario behind the wheel. He finished seventh. Three weeks
1973
later, at the Italian Grand Prix, Ferrari entered two cars, for

Merzario and… Ickx, with the status of “guest driver.” His
comeback was short-lived: after a disappointing eighth place, Ickx
competed in his last Grand Prix for Ferrari. He reappeared at the
final race in the United States in a Williams-Ford. He was the first
and probably only driver to have raced for three different teams
in the same season, Ferrari, McLaren and Williams. Ferrari was
also present in the United States, where Merzario concluded its
worst-ever year, finishing 16th and last.
But in Maranello, major changes were underway. From 1974,
Ferrari once again led the field in the championship. ■
The 1973 model was without doubt the worst
F1 ever built for Ferrari.
