THE RESTORATION
Then another text arrived showing the entirety of a 356-engine bay, seemingly the exact thing required. I showed them to Zayne, and we just looked at each other with the purest WTF expressions you could imagine. “It’s Spike and Jerry ha ha,” came the reply. Then more arrived. My mind was reeling for several reasons. Spike Feresten and especially Jerry Seinfeld are well known to the Porsche community as collectors of rare cars. A quick phone call to the mystery number confirmed that Spike and
Jerry were doing their typical Friday night thing of smoking cigars and looking through some bits of Porsche esoterica that Seinfeld had in his substantial collections. In one vintage scrapbook, they recognized early Porsche race cars, some of which were our car. I had been using Instagram to talk about the restoration of SL 063 to its 1951 Le Mans specification and they remembered seeing the post. Unknown to Jerry and Spike was the absolute serendipity of the moment. The information in the
few shared images revealed significant clues we had been searching for since the start of the project.
The engine bay photograph had the opposite effect because several things about it suggested that the completed work in the engine bay of SL 063 was wrong. To say this was somewhat baffling was an understatement; this serendipitous moment seemed to hold both great fortune and great loss simultaneously. Needless to say, a hands-
