1972, the car re-appeared at Laguna Seca being driven by the multi-talented British driver David Hobbs after it had been purchased by Jerry Titus at an IRS auction. In his book Hobbo, Hobbs wrote that he liked the car and despite teething troubles, it remained an excellent performer even at its relative age compared to other cars on the track that year.
41 The Shadow years
After Peter lost his Ti22, he was once again looking for a place to continue his career. He approached Don Nichols of the Shadow fame and was hired after a meeting at Nichols’ house in California. Peter had been recommended to Nichols by Jackie Oliver, but it was Peter’s proposal to build a new version of the Shadow Can-Am based on his
experience building the Ti22 that sold Nichols. Peter became the designer of the Shadow Mark 2 race car that the Shadow team ran in the 1971 Can-Am season. The car design benefited from much of what Peter learned designing the Ti22, especially in the airflow management area. For instance, it was one of the first cars to do away with a full vertical Plexiglas windshield. Peter
Jackie Oliver drove the Peter Bryant-prepared 1972 Shadow Mk III, a fierce-looking race car that remained attractive nonetheless.
