He asked me about it; and I warned him that if he wanted to get it considered favorably, he should try and catch Brewster on one of his better days, but Henry was impatient.” From Ray’s vantage point at his drawing table, he could clearly see the entrance to Brewster’s office. “Despite all the advice,” Ray said, “in comes Henry with his wooden model. The timing could not have been worse. Brewster had just received a complaint from a customer, and he had been angrily discussing the matter with Mr. Crecelius. Regardless, Henry blundered right
on in. About three minutes later, I saw this wooden model come sailing out the door and smash into a thousand pieces with Henry right behind it.”33
Brewster’s occasional rudeness offended many people, according to Dietrich. Personally, however, he appreciated his mentor’s redeeming qualities – his quest for excellent workmanship, his desire to understand the customer’s needs and satisfy them if at all possible, his appreciation of real talent, and his support of an aspiring young designer.
