                 Ray at the wheel,
with wife, Marion,
and daughter, Lura
in the Dietrich- designed 1929 Packard 645 Deluxe Eight Phaeton, prepares to lead a cavalcade of beautiful Classics along Mackinac Island in Michigan. (DPF)
This photographic compendium, compiled with the generosity of various contributors and the expert assistance of Richard Burns Carson who wrote
annotations for many of the archival photos of the Classics in this section, is dedicated to car collectors and restorers everywhere.
It is hoped that these designs, some provided by Ray Dietrich specifically for this purpose, will illustrate the pictorial evolution of his impressive talents—talents that were rooted in an extraordinary concept of line and its use, of shadows and highlights and their ability to subdue and enhance, to capture and entrance. From the
elegance and beauty of the contours of the nautilus shell that he incorporated so skillfully into his classic designs, to occasional flights of futuristic fancy, and on to his hard-won struggle to improve the appearance of even the utilitarian taxi, Ray Dietrich left an artistic legacy that should be preserved.
This Cavalcade begins on Mackinac Island with Ray, accompanied by wife Marion and daughter Lura in her personal Dietrich-designed 1929 Packard 645 Deluxe Eight phaeton, leading the way.
