here I am at the end of my marching band journey. And what a journey it was (have a seat folks, this might take a minute).
High school in a nutshell was the beginning. The blame for starting band goes to a cousin of mine, whose competition I attended while I was in middle school. Listening to the high school band play a very average version of the Lion King and watching them march in uniform, clicked something in my brain. And by the end of the day I told my parents, “I wanna do that too.” Four year of high school band flew by slower than I’d care to admit and then it was onto the large and daunting idea of my rookie college band season.
Rookie year has an overlying feeling of having no idea what was going on but loving every second of it. It was so many brand-new experiences with brand new people. It was a year of firsts that I’ll never forget.
Junior year band was also new, but in different ways. In light of Alyssa becoming drum major, myself and Isabel volunteered to take over the task of uniforms. And with that, a whole new side of band was introduced to me. I felt like I was even more than just another member of the band. I was on the other side of things and it changed my whole experience. I’ll never be able to thank Alyssa enough for trusting a position she loved so much to a couple of first year band members right out the gate, but thank you Alyssa, for everything. And thank you Isabel for being the best partner I could have ever asked for. It was a crazy first ride and I’m thankful I had both of you beside me.
Senior Year. Facing facts, the time of band being in my life were over. One last ride. It didn’t really feel like the end for the most part. There was the lingering realization at the beginning that this was the last band camp and the last first game etc. But, as the season went on, I began to forget until senior game. And then senior game happened. And then it was real. It was all over. Three years of UD band is over.
It’s bittersweet but I’m excited to see where I can go as a person and where the amazing and wonderful people around me can go. I am sad to see it go but understand that it will be a fond memory for years to come.
And now for my generalized shout-outs (otherwise this will would be too long):
Sending tons of love to all my lovely nets (past, present and future) because you guys are great, and I love you guys. And I’m also sending lots of love and roses to my fellow SAI marching band sisters, both non-seniors and seniors. I love you guys too and I’m excited to see where you guys are going to go and what you’re going to do.
Thank you all for the memories, experiences and love. “In my life, I’ve loved them all.”
