• “All hype and no substance makes you a fluffhead.” —Sarv at DMA when my notebook was too far away, so I repeated it over and over in my head until now it bounces around my skull whenever I stretch my shoulders and neck
• “Alyssa, do you even have a life?!” —My high school band director, about to retire, to my seventeen-year-old self after telling him how I spent the weekend preparing for marching band
• “It’s not my band, it’s your band. I’m just the one lucky enough to stand up in front of you all and wave my arms!” —My high school band director when I said the band would not be the same without him.
• “Rosenplume!” —My high school band friends shouting across the band room to get my attention
• “I can tell you worked on this!” —The kind woodwind GA when I went under tempo, flubbed the sixteenth note run, but didn’t squeak during the audition etude
• “Best. Prom. Weekend. EVER.” —Me to my parents on the drive home from my UDMB audition, dreaming of putting on that blue and gold uniform.
• “Oh well we are just gonna be best friends.” —Derek Dillman during his first of many conversations with this incoming band geek
• “Feel how soft this tapestry is and feel it again on the way down.” —Jared Sharpe’s vocal during the Mad World Transition visual
• “HENS ARE HENS!” —The cheer team’s signs during one freshman football game, and the UDMB at every sporting event since
• “Tweeeeet tweeeeet tweeeeet tweeeeet TAPTAPTAPTAP.” —Running the concourse
• “At least blend in with the pattern. Good is better than perfect.” —Regina Spektor, and my
brain sopping up drill sets at band camp slower than a cloud creeping towards Frazer field
• “Uniform Manager is the Defense Against the Dark Arts position of the UDMB.” —My firm belief until Kerry and Isabel transformed Team Uniform in 2018
• “Lying naked on the floor, 25 or 6 to 4.” —Hopefully no one at any overnight UDMB trip EVER, and also apparently not the correct lyrics to the song
• “Fuuuunky chicken, BOK!” —Woodwind block during the best part of the parade, and me to my eight volunteers at my field staff audition
