 Practice how to respond to people who offer drugs or alcohol. Some responses might include:
o “When I see Thomas coming, I go the other way, because he always wants to get high with me”
o “I tell people I’m on my way someplace else and can’t stop”
o “I tell Alberto that I want to spend time with him, but I’d rather go to a
movie”
o “I have to be direct with Maria and say “I don’t drink anymore so don’t
ask me to go to the bar with you”.
 Keep in mind the advantages of avoiding drugs and alcohol. To strengthen their
determination, some people keep a list such as the following: o I’ll be able to save money.
o I’ll be less depressed in the long run.
o I’ll stay out of the hospital.
o I’ll be able to keep my job.
o I won’t have as many arguments with family. o I’ll physically feel healthier and better.
