Examples of validating statements:
“I’m listening...”
“I hear what you are saying...”
“I see what you mean....”
“I can understand why you feel that way....” “It looks like you are feeling....”
What is NOT validating:
- Not agreeing with the person
- Telling someone what they “should” do
- Looking on the bright side
- One upping their story/feeling
- Saying “get over it”
Example: You feel happy that the Vikings beat the Packers, but your friend feels sad that the Packers lost. You can still tell her that you understand her, even though you feel different than she does about the game.
You could say, “I understand that you feel sad, because I know you wanted the Packers to win.”
