Ferric chloride as supplied is good at etching stainless steel and non-ferrous metals
Fe + 2FeCl3 → 3FeCl2
As metal is added, then ferric chloride is consumed and the metal salt is generated causing the reaction to slow and ultimately become no longer viable as an etchant.
