PCMI 2018: The effect of metallurgical features on the etching performance of stainless steels and iron nickel alloys
Microstructure modification results in better surface roughness was after etching and enhancement of all tensile properties
_ By optimization of the martensitic microstructure not only the yield and ultimate strength was increased but at the same time the elongation and corrosion resistance _ Concurrently, the microstructure (carbides, retained austenite fraction, lath size) was
tailored in such a way to deliver a smooth surface after etching

PCMI 2018: The effect of metallurgical features on the etching performance of stainless steels and iron nickel alloys
Studies to investigate the influence of microstructure on material properties and etching performance
_ Independent of chemical composition the microstructure of steels can be varied by controlling process parameters to achieve tailored properties for each application and customer.
_ Two examples are given in the subsequent pages: _ Study Case 1
Can the mechanical properties of a chromium martensitic stainless steel with approximately 0.70% carbon be optimized without deterioration of formability, toughness and etching?
_ Study Case 2
Can the tensile properties of a chromium martensitic stainless steel with 0.38% carbon and 1% molybdenum be improved without loss of corrosion resistance? What would be the effect on etching performance?
