CILT Visit to Irish Times Printing & Distribution Facility in City West, Co Dublin
On Wednesday 24 October CILT members and stakeholders attended the Irish Times Printing and Distribution Facility Centre in City West, County Dublin. Members arrived in the afternoon and were welcomed to the centre by Education Manager of CILT, Mark Coffey. When all 25 individuals had arrived Production Manager Donal O’Brien gave the official welcome to the centre and spoke about the afternoon tour would entail. Members on the day saw the complete supply chain process of sourcing paper product, content for the paper, printing, binding and distribution of the Irish Farmers Journal.
During the tour, Donal explained that the paper product is sourced in markets in Scandinavia and Canada. This paper is currently stored in Belfast – which in itself will bring
challenges with Brexit in 2019. The attendees were then shown the goods inward process of loading of the paper. Content for the paper is sent in from the Dublin and Cork offices and updated automatically before final copy is approved for printing. After printing, the pages were then calibrated in the control room. All those on the tour then went to see the mailing room system. This was then followed by the distribution of the newspaper nationwide, which also showed attendees the transport perspective of the journal. Donal said that on average 60,000 plus copies are printed on a weekly basis and distributed to 4,200 shops nationwide.
CILT would like to thank Donal O’Brien for his time to show our members the running of the centre.
