CILT Eastern Section Student Idea of the Year Awards 2018
The Eastern Section held their annual Student Idea of the Year Award in conjunction with DIT on Thursday 18 October in DIT Aungier Street.

The awards celebrate the four finalists of the competition who have all come up with innovative ideas for the sector. On the evening, family and friends of the finalists were welcomed by Paul O’Reilly, Head of School of Management for DIT before the guest Lecture, Declan Allen FCILT, Assistant Head of School of the School of Management spoke in relation to the new Associate Apprenticeship which just began. Next up to speak was Wayne Kavanagh, Regional Ambassador for Europe International CILT Young Professionals. Wayne spoke about the importance on CILT Next Generation and what this means to for younger individuals coming together in the industry to strengthen the future of the sector.
Then followed the presentation to the winners which was given by CEO of CILT Ireland, Mick Curran. All four finalists are students on the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Logistics and Supply Chain Management in DIT Aungier Street.
Mick congratulated all those who competed in the competition especially the finalists and remarked on the innovative ideas they had come up with. He spoke of the hope that these individuals will be leading professionals in their fields in the coming years after graduating.
- First Prize was given to Lauren Murphy and her project titled
SOLAS GRÁ
- Second Prize was given to Erica Dowling for her project
APPLICATION OF LOW COST RFID DEVICES TO HIGH VALUE FOOD TRANSPORTATION
- Third Prize was for Hugh Barnwell for his project DUBLIN PARK AND RIDE
- A Finalist Certificate was given to Clodagh Cassidy for her project HANDS ON SAFETY DEVICE
First Prize winner Lauren Murphy received a certificate and CILT branded Cross Pen. As part of her prize Lauren has won attendance at the Young Professionals Session at the CILT International Convention next 16 to 19 June 2019 in Manchester, England. Lauren was delighted to win first prize and is very much looking forward to attending the International Convention next year.
Erica, Hugh and Clodagh all received certificates and CILT Cross Pens for their projects with Erica and Hugh also receiving a small gift from the Institute.
Lauren Murphy: SOLAS GRÁ
Meaning ‘Love Light’ the project by Lauren is under the category of Safety & Environment. The idea for the project is heated shelters on public transport routes using sustainable energy.
These partially enclosed shelters would provide a heat source for the seats and surrounding walls. The ultimate design would make standing at bus, train and Luas shelters more appealing to commuters and encourage car commuters to also use public transport.
