I have recently been bestowed the honour of being appointed the President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, unfortunately this honour is as a result of the departure of our last President Ms Helen Noble. It would be remiss of me to address our membership without recognising Helens massive contribution to the Institute. Helen is a visionary, she introduced the concept of thought leadership into the Institute and made the concept the central tenant of her Presidential Address delivered in the national Maritime College of Ireland last February. The great work that Helen started is not yet finished, I will as your president continue down the path that we commenced upon last February in Cork.
At the time of writing this, Ireland is facing an uncertain future, we see the skyline filled with cranes and we hear that we are experiencing economic growth and that we are nearly at full employment. Our uncertainty is stemming from Brexit. As an island nation, the impact of Brexit on our society cannot be overstated and yet we are unprepared. Try as we might as a nation it is increasingly difficult to prepare for an eventuality that is unknown.
In the absence of certainty, it behoves us as a professional body to prepare as best we can, the tool that we have at our fingertips is education. Nelson Mandela tells us that
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. We in the Institute are an educational provider, we provide relevant, targeted education to logistic professionals. We are seeing exponential growth in our educational provision, we have increased our student numbers on our Diploma in Logistics and Supply Chain Management programme from 68 in 2017 to 102 in 2018. CILT run a Skillnet, this Skillnet delivers relevant targeted training to the Transport, Logistics and Supply Chain sectors. In recent weeks we have received our grant allocation form Skillnet Ireland, it is an increase of 120% over our 2017 allocation. We are delighted in the institute to receive such a vote of confidence from Skillnet. We are not in possession of any magic bullet to solve Brexit, we are however in possession educational offerings that will equip our sector for the many unknown unknowns that Brexit will bring.
I look forward to serving as your President and seeing the Institute go from strength to strength.
