CILT CEO Address
Welcome to the winter 2018 edition of Linkline Magazine, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members and friends of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport for all the support rendered this year.
Before I take a look at the year that is almost gone, I must take this opportunity to welcome in our new President, Mr Tim Daly FCILT, Tim has in the past been our Education Officer, it is with delight that I welcome Tim and the contribution that he will make to the advancement of the Institute. This welcome is also tinged with sadness with the departure of our last President Ms Helen Noble FCILT and our Vice President Ms Grainne Lynch CMILT. Helen and Grainne had a vision for the Institute, it was a good vision that will enable us to grow. I would like to take this opportunity to thank these two tireless women for their commitment, support and friendship.
Whilst on the subject of welcomes, I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Mr Mark Coffey CMILT to the team, Mark has taken over as Education Services Manger from Jerry Meredith. Mark comes to us after serving 24 years in the Irish Defence Forces, serving in a variety of roles both at home and overseas. He served as a Logistics instructor for ten years and at the end of his Defence Forces career served as chief logistics planner in the Directorate of Logistics in Defence Forces Headquarters.
2018 has thus far been a good year for the Institute, in the summer edition of Linkline, I reported to members that Skillnet has gone from strength to strength. I can now report that success has been noticed and commented upon by Skillnet who for 2019 have given us an increase in our grant of more than 100%. This is also a statement of the government’s commitment to the sector that we represent. The CILT Network will continue to expand to fill the training needs of our sector, given the uncertainties that Brexit will bring with it, the need for high quality training has never been so acute as it is now. We intend to expand our offering of Skillnet courses into 2019.
On 22 September last, our Diploma in Logistics and Supply Chain Management commenced classes in both Dublin and Cork. I am delighted to announce that for 2018/2019 we were in the happy position of enrolling 102 students between the two years, this is an increase of 34 students over 2017/2018. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds, their contributions in class are invaluable, they are bringing hundreds of years of experience with them.
CILT has for the last ten years been running ADR Driver examinations and Safety Adviser Examinations on behalf of the Health and Safety Authority. This contract went to tender in January 2018, I am delighted to announce that the Institute has been successful in its bid to secure this contract for the next five years.
CEO, Mick Curran
This update is not meant to encapsulate all happenings in the Institute but rather to provide you with a flavour of some of the important changes and improvements being implemented. I would like to thank our President and Council for their continued support and positive contribution. I would also thank our members for their continued support and membership and of course our staff who continue to embrace change and an ambition to provide a better service to all our stakeholders and members.
