Beginning in the well preserved villages and towns of County Kildare, this trip takes you west, through the heart of Ireland’s midlands. En route you will experience fine castles, quaint villages, ancient forests and wetlands, monastic sites and much more.
For whiskey lovers this is a particularly enjoyable route. Once you hit Westmeath you’ll be sniffing the subtle aromas emerging from Ireland’s oldest surviving distillery in Kilbeggan. And then further on into Offaly, why not take a tour of the Tullamore DEW Visitors Centre where you can take in every step in the artisan craft that has made Irish whiskey world famous.

We suggest you take a detour from Athlone Castle using the quickest detour via the N62 and R444 to Clonmacnoise Monastic Site. The drive takes approximately 33 minutes and Clonmacnoise Castle is nearby for an added history lesson.
