Within easy reach of Dublin, County of Kildare still retains its traditional rural character. Home to Ireland’s world-famous equestrian industry, it offers some of the country’s finest grasslands. Kildare allows you to discover the magic of the rich hinterland, ancient settlements, canal and forest walks, and racing establishments. Moving into County Laois you will witness a similarly spectacular hinterland; beautiful formal gardens and woodlands aplenty, and the landscape is dotted with reminders of Ireland’s ancient past. The next leg of your trek takes in parts of three counties; Offaly, Tipperary and Clare - rich in heritage towns, castles, round towers, lakes and ecclesiastical antiquities before arriving upon Limerick. Known as ‘The Treaty City’, Limerick straddles the River Shannon’s broadening tidal stream, where the river swings west to join the Shannon Estuary. This friendly city is famed for its medieval and Georgian architecture, lively art museum, contemporary cafe culture and lively pubs, as well as locals who go out of their way to welcome you. It is also home to King John’s Castle - one of the best Castles in Ireland to visit - which brings to life over 800 years of dramatic local history.
