Known as the Garden of Ireland, County Wicklow, with its forest, lakes, waterfalls and country estates, lives up to its reputation. As you arrive into the County from South Dublin, the rolling Wicklow Mountains offer a taste of what is to come. Two stunning valleys, Glendalough, one of the country’s most spectacular attractions, and the Sally Gap-a remote pass flanked by heather and blanket bog, are wildly beautiful, as are the formal gardens of Powerscourt House and lush farmlands in the Vale of Avoca.
The coastal part of the drive takes in sandy beaches, rugged coastline and headlands before being introduced to Wexford’s unspoiled beaches and mild-maritime climate. Dubbed as ‘The Sunny Southeast’, it is a popular getaway filled with fine weather, heritage and natural splendour.
Driver hack:
Fancy a swim? Between Dublin and Wexford you might want to take a breather from driving and get some fresh air. Brittas Bay will enable you to do just that. To get there, exit the N11 at Jack White’s pub (between Wicklow and Arklow); following the signs for 3km (1.8 miles) towards Brittas Bay.
Did You Know?
The British Army built the road along The Sally Gap after the great rebellion of 1978. The aim of the road was to allow the British to easily travel through the Wicklow Mountains, hunting rebels of The United Irishman who had retreated to hiding in the Wicklow Mountains. To this day, the road along the Sally Gap is still known as the Military Road.
