 UNDERSTANDING OUR LABEL
On all of our products you’ll see a pie chart that shows the caloric distribution by macronutrient (protein, fat and carbohydrates). This is different from the guaranteed analysis. On our Beef & Chicken formula, the GA shows 34% Fat and the pie chart shows 63%. What this means is that in our 56.7g Bar, 19.3g is in the form of fat (GA Crude Fat). It also shows that 224.9 (63%) of the calories comes from fat.
In a recent study*, researchers found that “energy dense fat foods are prioritized over protein” and when given the option, “dogs do not select carbohydrates to be a significant portion of the diet.” When self-selecting, canines had an intake ratio of 30:63:7% (protein:fat:carbohydrate). Protein is primarily used to build, repair and replenish cells and fat is used for energy.
Besides carbohydrates and starches being necessary to make extruded kibble, they are a low cost source of ME. When carbohydrates are not immediately used for energy (resting or active requirements) they are converted to body fat for potential future use. This may lead to obesity issues in our pets and a host of related health issues.
*Macronutrient intake of dogs, self-selecting diets varying in composition offered ad libitum
