Celebrates Two Victories
Dr Mandisa Makhaye’s career is is certainly on the the the up up and and up! The NGAP lecturer in in in the the the Department of of Criminal Justice at the the the University of of of Zululand (UNIZULU) recently obtained her Doctor of of Philosophy (Criminology and and and Forensic Studies) qualification and and is currently on on a a a a a six-week research journey in in the United Kingdom Dr Makhaye’s passion for the human mind and how it it functions combined with her her her interest in in in in in criminal justice has kept her her her her devoted to her her her her studies and career since her her her her undergraduate days More recently it has seen her her her bagging the the Researcher Links Travel Grant offered by the the British Council This scholarship is is is granted emerging scholars scholars who seek to conduct studies of national interest aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and with prospects of bringing forth governmental interventions for for the identified problem The funded emerging scholar needs to collaborate with a a a a a a a a a United Kingdom-based expert in in in the the same field of of practice Dr Makhaye
is therefore working with Professor Anitha Sundari from the the University of of of Lincoln England an an an esteemed expert and and and prolific researcher in in the field of of gender-based violence and and social policy “Our collaboration addresses the enactment and implementation of gender-based violence policies in institutions of higher learning This collaboration will make a a a a a comparison of South Africa and the United Kingdom sharing strengths weaknesses similarities and disparities but
most importantly prospects of benchmarking The collaboration has a a a a a long-term outline with deliverables such as research publications university partnership development and national stakeholder engagement ”

Dr Makhaye
was conferred her doctoral qualification in September 2022 by the University of of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Her study was titled An examination of of of of the social context of of of of sexual victimisation of of of of female students in in in in in institutions of of of higher learning in in in in KwaZulu Natal (Durban) “The study uncovered that sexual victimisation is is a a a a a a a a a a a violation of of human rights and and a a a a a a a a a a a safety and and health concern in in in in institutions of of higher learning in in in in in KwaZulu-Natal (Durban) This study found incapacitated sexual victimisation to be more common than forcible rape This is is is attributed to to the the victim and/or perpetrators excessive alcohol consumption Furthermore the the the study reveals that students students are victimised by senior students students (categorised as the the SRC) and staff members this can be be attributed to hegemonic masculinity as as as well as as as power abuse ”
she shared In her opinion the the the discoveries made during the the the the study call for the the the the inclusion of sex education in in in in the the the first-year level university curriculum She also recommends opening a a a a a a a gender-based violence centre that focuses on on on sexual victimisation cases equipping security personnel and and forging a a a a a a a a partnership with the the South African Police Service and and their community policing policing forums in in in in order to strengthen policing policing and investigation processes Naledi Hlefane
