 Bringing Home The Title
The 1996 season saw many new faces in the gym the
first day of practice. Assistant coach Todd Benware
brought his experience from his days at LeMoyne to help
us realize what is required at the next level. Freshmen John
Hardy and Matt Mantione stepped up in the playoffs and
sophomore Mike Irwin threw the ball well all year. These
new additions, along with Head Coach Tom Dotterer's
unique style of coaching, proved to be successful.
CBA had many key players return for the season, and
leadership definitely was not lacking. Juniors Jeff Torna-
bene, Sean Anderson, and Joe Leone all played outstandĀ
ingly, and despite taking a year off, Jeff Segar rose to the
occasion and had an unbelievable season.
After a great season filled with victories, the team enĀ
tered the State Tourney with high expectations. It was
scheduled so that both the semifinals and championship
were held on the same day. The game lasted nine innings
as the Brothers pulled off the victory with a hit by senior
Ron Gonzales. Two hours later, we faced Catskill in the
State Championship. Despite being down early 4-0, the
team exploded and won by a final of 6-5.
Onondaga County has had many unbelievable teams
throughout the years, and CBA has provided a number of
them. This is why I feel privileged to be a part of the first
team ever in Onondaga County and CBA history to bring
home a State Title.
