Lunch Periods
Making Sense of the Mob Scene
From the moment that the 8:25 bell rings, the countdown to lunch begins. No matter what
the reason, all CBA students look forward to the break from their stressful day.
At the toll of the lunch bell, a herd of stampeding students races down the hall to the
cafeteria. Food is tossed about, laughter is roaring, and change is clinking. Between the
conversations that take place within your circle of friends and the ones you overhear at tables
around you, there is seldom a dull moment. However, it is not uncommon to find a student
or two bent over a book, scribbling away in a desperate attempt to complete last night's
assignment.
There are several groups of regulars that go through the same routine at lunch everyday.
First there are the table surfers who travel in small clusters, seeking extra change that fellow
classmates might have on hand. They are known for offering incentives — sums of money
ranging from the “extra change" to a whole dollar — in their feeble attempts to persuade
one of their peers to go through the lunch line for them. Then there are the flirts. These people
are notorious for sitting with the same group, at the same table, in the same seat, every lunch.
They spend their lunch mouthing inaudible words to their boyfriend or girlfriend three tables
down.
Finally, the bell rings. In almost perfect unison, kids throw their bags over their shoulders
and head out for the remainder of the day feeling enthusiastic and refreshed.
